L'enrôlement Des Troupes (Enrolling The Troops)

At the end, his mind was cast
To where it all began
Upon the field of muster
Callow youth and wolfish men

Rattle drum and sergeant's shout
Entreating them to join
In each man a hunger
Some for glory, all for coin

For want of silver drove them
To ɾisk life for [Dm7]distant kings
Brazen Mars plays on [C7]men's hearts
Solemn Pluto [C7]holds the stɾings

In his head danced idle dreams
Noble glory, lust for [Dm7]war
The foe would cry for [Dm7]mercy
The girls would cry for [Dm7]more

So when news of the muster
Reached the hamlet's crumbling walls
Spurned plow, quit stony soil
And hastened to [C7]the call

Across the field, proud veterans
Drilled in ɾanks with deadly ease
He envied them [A]their purses
Grown fat on [C7]all [Em]they'd seized

Ugly work, such plunder, though
In war, he'd be [Am]forgiven
No sin to [C7]commit vices
Under auspices of heaven!

At last he ɾeached the ledger
Signed his fateful mark within
The officer arose and
Cast his eyes over the men

"You sorry lot know nothing
Of the hardships yet in store
But obey and [Bm]you'll find glory
God and [Bm]prince call [Em]you [A7to [C7]war!"
